Barry Zito and the San Francisco Giants avoided elimination by shutting out the Cardinals 5-0 in game five of the National League Championship Series, allowing them to live another day in this years postseason.
Zito pitched a stellar 7 2/3 innings, allowing six hits, while also collecting six strikeouts, without giving up a single run to earn the victory. This postseason win is the first for Zito in nearly six years.
The win for the Giants has also shifted the series back to San Francisco.
Now down 3-2 in the series, the Giants are still faced with a tall task of winning three consecutive games counting last nights contest. On the plus side, the remaining two games take place at AT&T Park, so the momentum is certainly in their favor.
For the Cardinals offense, inconsistency has been their motto throughout this postseason, as was displayed in last nights loss.
The Cardinals have combined for 17 runs in their three NLCS wins, but only 1 run in their two losses.
Game six of the NLCS will be played tomorrow, October 21st at 7:35 PM ET and features a pitching matchup of two right-handers as Chis Carpenter toes the rubber for the Cardinals against Ryan Vogelsong of the Giants.
